LNG: an economic and environmental opportunity

Mainly composed of methane gas and a small percentage of ethane and butane, LNG is obtained by cooling and compressing this gaseous mixture at a temperature of -160°, reaching the liquid state.
Thanks to its features and its versatility of use, the LNG market is rapidly expanding, but what are the advantages?

• Transport and storage: thanks to the high density, the liquefaction process of this gas allows the volume to be reduced exponentially, consequently increasing the storage capacity of the tanks, allowing to amortize transport costs. However, unlike LPG, which can be stored at higher temperatures in standard tanks, LNG requires the use of cryogenic tanks, in order to maintain its liquid state.

• Product quality: LNG, thanks to its high combustible property, produces the same amount of energy as other fossil fuels, in addition more expensive, in the face of a lower use of raw material.

• Safety: being lighter than air, in the event of an unexpected leak, the LNG immediately disperses into the atmosphere, greatly reducing the risk of detonation.

• Environment: it is a low polluting gas, the combustion of which produces water vapor and a minimum part of CO2, without releasing either fine dust or sulfur compounds. Moreover, in the event of accidental release into water, as it is subject to rapid evaporation in contact with the atmosphere, LNG does not present a risk of pollution for aquatic environments.

Even Silea, thanks to its long experience in the Oil & Gas sector, is starting to take its first steps in this young market full of opportunities.
